In this report, the effect of shape of particles on their hindered settling velocity in water is mainly discussed, and the viscosity of the suspension is also discussed. The viscosity of suspensions of glass and quartz smaller than 150-mesh size in water and acetylene tetrabromide was measured and the relation between the viscosity and the volumetric fraction of the suspension occupied by the particles is expressed as follows : [numerical formula]where η_s is viscosity of the suspension, η viscosity of the medium, γ_c critical volumetric fraction of the suspension occupied by the particles, γ the volumetric fraction of the suspension occupied by the particles and m and n constants. The author deduced the formula expressing the hindered settling velocity in the constant rate settling period of the suspension of fine glass particles having comparatively narrow size range in water, which is expressed as follows : [numerical formula]where V is the hindered settling velocity of the suspension, V_s the free setting velocity of one particle and other notations have previously been given. The relation between the hindered settling velocity of the suspension and the shape of particles was studied and the following experimental formula is obtained : [numerical formula]where V is the hindered settling velocity of the suspension, when the sphericity of the particles is ψ, and V_0 is the hindered settling velocity of the suspension when the sphericity of the particles is 1 and b is constant.
