The chemical methods were adopted for the purpose of prospecting. In this paper, the results of chamical prospecting of the north-eastern part of Mt. Zao district by the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration and determinotion of copper and zinc in the mountain-streams are described. In this district, the existence of iron pyrite associated with small amount of chalcopyrite had previously been expected. Variation of hydrogen ion concentration was small ranging from pH 5.2 to 5.6 and its correlation with the deposits was not recognized. Copper and zinc were titrated extractively with carbontetrachloride solution of dithizone. Copper was detected only at one place except in mine water, and near it a pyrite outcrop associated with chalcopyrite was found. In the stream copper ion disappears so fast that its existence would indicate that some deposits might be found near the place. But copper could not always be detected in spite of an existence of chalcopyrite. Zinc does not disappear so fast as copper. Moreover, its existence was greater than copper and its quantity correlated with a deposit, so it was a useful ion as indicator.
