• In this paper we study when the pluri-canonical systems of a complete variety V of general type defined over the complex number field give birational mappings. The main result which will be stated below is a generalization of Maehara [2]. Let V be a complete normal Gorentstein variety with only canonical singularities and let K(V) denote a canonical divisor on V.
