In spite of Hawthorne's subtle device to distinguish the fictional from the factual in the "Preface," The Blithedale Romance itself reflects the realities of American life in the mid-nineteenth century in two ways. Firstly, Hawthorne makes good use of his own private experiences at Brook Farm, where he stayed from April to November in 1841. Secondly, he responds quite positively to some of the social reformation movements, such as Mesmerism, Prison Reform, Feminism, Feurierism and so forth, which were exceedingly prevalent in New England. In this paper I will focus my attention on the close relationship between Hawthorne and his times, clarifying his attitude toward American culture in the 1840s.
