The Tang period (A. D. 618-907) was a relatively open period in Chinese history. Many rich and famous people enjoyed playful hours with pleasure women, and the population of such women in the big cities was the largest compared to other periods. Many of the pleasure women in this period cultivated their artistic expressions in literature, especially in the field of poetry. We might look for some of the reasons for their artistic flowering in the cultural background of the Tang period. During this period, literary ability was highly valued. For example, the emperor Xuan Zhong of the Tang Dynasty established the "ke ju" entrance examination for the applicants of government official positions. This exam included a section on poem reading and interpretation to evaluate one's knowledge about poetry. Many politically and artistically gifted people spent their leisure time with pleasure women. The result of this intimate interaction became a spawning ground for the subsequent flowering of women poets among them.
