Chapter Suma in The Tale of Genji' has various quotations of Japanese Waka poems and Chinese poems that were written by many expelled poets in the Heian period. It was considered that these quotations enlarged the image of expelled Hikaru Genji, who is the hero of 'The Tale of Genji'. The three main quotations are: Yukihira's Japanese Waka poem, Michizane's Chinese poem, Hakukyoi's Chinese poem. The image of Hikaru Genji changes from a Japanese Waka poet to a Chinese poet. This article shows that the image of Hikaru Genji floats away by repeating the quotation, but at the same time, as he grows from a Japanese Waka poet to a Chinese poet, he attains a peaceful mind and salvation.
