• Great mystery has been found in the Suma Storm depicted in the Tale of Genji. It is still controversial whether or not Hikaru Genji purified his karma after the storm. His karma appeared again When he committed adultery with Fujitsubo, the second wife of his father, Emperor Kiritsubo. This article shows that the episode harbours ambivalence in the way the author symbolically describes light and shadow. From what is expressed in the prayer to God, however, it could be concluded that Hikaru Genji did succeed in his purification.
