KANKAI-RYU is one of the twelve Japanese martial arts swimming schools, and an authorized one by Japan Swimming Federation. The headquarters of it is in the central city of Mie Prefecture, Tsu. It was founded by Miya Hatutaro who had come to the Tsu-Han that was governed by the Toudo family, originally in 1852 in Edo era. And next year, KANKAI-RYU was adoptted as a new Budo subject for the purpose of the naval defense and the education of samurai (warrior) to serve the Tsu Clan (320,000 koku). This study investigated why KANKAI-RYU was adoptted as a new Budo subject, and what are the merits.
