• The purpose of this paper is to construct a unified theory of inheritance in deverbal nominals, deverbal adjectives and deadjectival adverbs. The preservation of semantic features in derivation plays an important role in the inheritance of argument structure as previous studies of inheritance are concerned with semantics. This paper examines some of the previous theories concerned with semantics (Levin and Rappaport 1988, Grimshow 1990, Takeno, T. 1992 and Takahashi, M. 1993) and finally proposes the Inheritance Principle. It is suggested that inheritance is possible only if the semantic features of the base word are preserved in its derived word.
