Some researchers argue that evaluative responses can be conditioned without awareness of contingency, and conditioned evaluative responses are highly resistant to extinction. They called that type of conditioning "Evaluative Conditioning", and insist that it is a qualitatively distinct type of learning different from ordinary classical conditioning. They suggest that there are two types of learning, namely signal learning and referential learning. Evaluative Conditioning is thought as a typical example of referential learning. Other psychologists criticize that 'Evaluative Conditioning' is merely an artifact due to the specific procedure. The author surveyed and critically reviewed articles on Evaluative Conditioning. It doesn't seem useful to argue without refinement of procedures whether Evaluative Conditioning is a distinct type of learning or not. The distinction between signal learning and referential learning is attractive. We may be able to understand the process of formation of social preferences by the notion of referential learning. Further inspection about referential learning is needed.
