With a striking decrease in recent years in the number of high school graduates applying for admission to colleges, various types of educational reforms have been designed and implemented in each college to ensure its survival despite keen competition. It may go without saying that one of the most important reforms is improving the methods of teaching. College teachers are expected to develop ways of teaching that gain the assent of their students, but it is no easy task to satisfy all students, as they will have a wide range of academic levels, and consequently varied expectations of English teaching. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a student-centered group work activity in a reading class and indicate how effective it can be in enhancing learning motivation and to verify that it produces improvement in the comprehension of English. In addition, this paper touches upon the social advantage for group work. It can be noticed that group work creates a relaxed atmosphere and lets learners feel freer to make mistakes. Therefore, learners cooperate positively with their peers and find solutions for their problems. It is a desirable byproduct for learners to realize that they are situated in the center of classroom activities and find that learning can be highly enjoyable.
