Examined here is women's working situation in Okinawa, Japan. Following a brief historical overview of Okinawa, women's situation in Okinawa is reviewed in terms of representation in the population and in the labor force and non-labor force, and a new statistical measure, the Work Participation Rate, is introduced. After investigation of characteristics of women's employment, both remunerated and unremunerated, consideration of women's place in education, in terms of employment, promotion, and representation in textbooks, reveals a close congruence between actual social/employment conditions of women and their utilization and representation in the educational system. In the conclusion, an analogy is drawn suggesting that within Japan, Okinawa is to the mainland as, within Okinawa, women are to men, and it is suggested that greater attention to the development of these disadvantaged sectors of the population, Okinawans and women, will ultimately be of benefit to the rest of the population.
