I . The purpose of this study The purpose of this study is to clarify this notion through comparing the effectiveness of giving the students a task in groups- (finishing works ; presentation) which has roots deep in the necessity of familiar media ; their special study, motives, Iife and living-with giving them nothing. II . Hypotheses 1 . in English learning 'More familiar' existing between English and the students (a) to give the students a task completing a treatise, 'Why should we study English ?' as a group task wlll improve their attitudes and intensify their interest and improve their ability in English learning. 2 . Likewise, (b) to give the students a task singing an English song in unison (or in chorus) as a group task will improve their attitudes and intensify their interest and improve their ability in English learning. III. The method of the ewperiment 1 ) Subjects : Hokkaido Tokai University The Department of Art and Technology Freshmen 41 persons ( 2 classes, 7 groups, ) English Conversation Course I 2) The experiments The experiments (test) inspecting the effectiveness of `More familiar' [(a)+(b)+(c)], was conducted as an English test during the terminal examination periods in Hokkaido Tokai University as follows. (1) The first semester : The second period, September 20th, Thursday, 1984 (2) The latter semester : The third period, February 18th, Monday, 1984 IV. The results 1) Hypothesis 1 was substantated. 2) Hypothesis 2 was rejected. V. Discussion 1) The treatse which was written as an individual task before `More familiar media', the task completing a tretise, `Why should we study English?' as a group was turned in form Thursday, September 5th, 1984 until Monday, September 10th, 1984. The significant differences were not supported between the results of the English tests in first semester of the treatment group (handing in the treatise as an individual task) and that of the treatment group given nothing. And the significant differences were supported at 1% level between the difference between `the first semester English test result' and `the latter semester English test result' and `that of the group given nothing. It is supposed completing a treatise as a group task after sending in the treatise as an individual task is effective for improving the students ability in English learnig. 2) I took up `More familiar media (b) singing an English song in unison (or in chorus) as a group because I thought it will match with the youths' taste and improve their attitudes and intensift interest and improve their ability in English Learning, but the effectiveness was not suustantiated. VI. Future questions Because the result of the experiment had partly been significant, I may be able to understand the effectiveness of `More familiar media' was indentified to a certain extent. To pursue the effectiveness of this kind of media by accumulating the experiments must be `A Future question.'
