Though expanding shale is utilized for light weight aggregate, it has a large water absorption capacity. As it is partially melted and remained solid grains at bloated temperature, the aggregate has many open pores. As the open pore may behave like a crack, strength of the aggregate may not be enough, compared to the material which is mostly melted. It is therefore necessary to produce a aggregate which is mainly composed of glass and has closed pores. In west area of Ten-ei Village, Fukushima Prefecture, pumice tuff of the latest Tertiary to the early Quaternary in Age is distributed. This pumice tuff is mainly composed of volcannic glass, and of small amounts of quartz, pyroxine, etc. The results of the experimental studies to find out suitable firing temperature and additives, and to find appropriate density and low water absorption are presented. The collected tuff is ground to -200 meshes, mixed with additives and pelleted, and then heated at desired temperature. Since the foams in fired aggregate are almost sealed, it has low water absorption, and is expected to have higher strength than the expanded shale. The concrete cylinder block (50×100mm) in the aggregate mixed, showed higher compressive strength than that in which the expanding shale is used.light weight aggregatevolcanic glasspumiceFukushima prefecturecompressive strength
