Foam glass may soon be used as an important insulator of buildings to decrease the energy consumption. It is assumed that, large volumes of glass-rich volcanic products available in Tohoku Province, Northeast Japan are available to produce foam glass. Experimental studies on bloating of Towada vocanic materials are presented. Samples are ground to -200 mesh, and are mixed with CaSO_4,CaCO_3 and char, and then formed into pellets. The pellets are put into electric furnace at desired temperature, and kept for 20 minutes. In some case, samples are heated at 1000℃, for 10 minutes, and then heated to desired temperature. The chemical compositions of bloated samples are mostly plotted in the "area of bloating" on diagram by Riley (1951). The detritus which contain higher amount of glass and ferric iron is found to have tendency of well bloating. Addition of varying amount of char depress or elevate the dissociation temperatures of SO_x from CaSO_4 or SO_x from CaCO_3,in order to bloat at appropriate viscosity. Some additives are found to be effective to decrease bloating temperature and to control the bulk density. As the foams of the fired samples are found to be completely sealed and discrete, utilization of glass-rich volcanic product in foam glass is to be promising.foam glassglass-rich volcanic product
