Born in 1827, John Man (Japanese name Nakahama, Manjiro ) is famous as Japanese first professional naval engineer. Man got his early technical training in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, after he was rescued in a shipping accident. Man was only 15 years old at that time. The captain of the rescue ship, William, H. Whitfield became Man's foster father. Man studied in America for 8 years, earning a degree from the Bartlett Academy. He returned to Japan in 1851. Working in Kochi and later for the central government as an expert on whale vessels, Man is widely regarded as Japanese first professional naval engineer. This paper tells the story of Mans unique career through the use of original historical documents.
