Four years after welcoming its first class of undergraduate students, Aomori Public College has established a new graduate school. In April, 1997, an entering group of twenty graduate students began a two year master's degree program in the disciplines of management and economics. To obtain their degrees, students generally must study for a period of six semesters. During these two years, they have the opportunity to take several electives, along with required classwork, which includes research report writing and a final thesis. The faculty at the new graduate school is very much an "international" group, with some fifty percent of the total being non-Japanese. Thus, visiting foreign professors, who stay at the college's nearby International House, are a common sight around the school. The new school's curriculum consists of the following compulsory classes: 1) Principles of Management (four credits, taught by two Japanese professors) 2) Microeconomics (six credits, taught by a combination of professors, Japanese and Americans) 3) Computer Statistics (a two credit workshop course, taught by an American professor) 4) Statistical Economics (four credits, with a Japanese professor) The scholastic standards for the school are high; a GPA system is in place. Students who fail a class must retake it and pass before graduation. After the required classes are completed, students have the chance to select their own classes. These electives are a good way for them to explore and develop interests in subjects of their choice. A thesis represents the final stage in the degree program. Each student conducts research and writes a paper that is submitted to a committee of professors. The committee reads and discusses the paper. Once an assessment of the paper's quality has been determined, the committee makes a final decision as to whether a student has fulfilled the requirements for graduation.
