This paper evaluates the impact one semester after students returned from the study abroad program at Boise State University in 2001. The assessment is based upon comparison of TOEFL score results from July, 2001 to January, 2002. The results indicate that the students made substantial gains. However, the gains concerning the three elements that are measured on the TOEFL test, listening, grammar, and reading were somewhat different than the results obtained after the summer program. This paper also reviews the scores from that program (Okamoto, 2001). At the end of the fall semester, the first-year students' largest gains were accrued in their grammar followed by listening scores. The second-year students' largest increases were in their listening followed by grammar scores. It appears that more emphasis should be placed upon reading. This will be an area where the next summer program can be improved.
