This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a four-week intensive English course at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. Eight first-year students, twelve second-year students, and one third-year student attended the program. An analysis of pre- and post-program Side by Side Speaking Placement Test and Test of English as a Second Language (TOEFL) indicated that substantial gains were accrued during the short duration of the program. An additional evaluation method utilized was an analysis of students' comments concerning the program. All of the students indicated that the program increased their motivation to study, inspiration to become better students, and tolerance to other cultures. It must be noted that the number of students attending was small and the duration of the program relatively short. As with any small sample, there is a risk that the results may not be indicative of general trends ; however, the analysis remains meaningful as an evaluation of this particular program and may assist other institutions proposing such a project. The format of the paper includes a summary of the summer intensive English course in 2000,a description of the program at Boise State University in 2001,an evaluation of students' English ability based upon results from speaking and TOEFL scores, statements by the students' concerning the program, an analysis of students' comments, and a summary and conclusion. The conclusion proposes suggestions for future short-term intensive English programs.
