The biological evaluation of immunocompetent cells derived from human breast milk in an early phase after parturition was carried out under the acidic culture system. The results obtained were as follows : 1. It was confirmed that major cell-populations of immunocompetent cells in human foremilk on day 4 after parturition consisted of macrophages (Mφs : 64%) and lymphocytes (Lcs : 28%) rather than granulocytes (polymorphonuclear leukocytes). 2. Under an acidic culture condition (pH 4.5), it was found that the living activity and the phagocytic function of Mφs in the foremilk on day 6 after parturition was drastically reduced as compared with those in the foremilk on day 4. 3. Ig A quantity in the foremilk on day 6 after parturition was significantly lower than that in the formilk on day 4 after that. These data were markedly in agreement with the decrease-patern of Mφs and Lcs numbers under the culture system.
