Mammals have four immune systems in an immunological surveillance. Among them, the nonspecific immune system can initially operate against the primary incidence of cancer and of infectious disease. It may be demonstrated that immunostimulants such as bacterial and mycelial agents activate strongly the nonspecific immune system, especially the macrophage - interferon - natural killer cell circuit. Therefore, these immunostimulants are very useful for cancer treatment and/or opportunistic infections in combination with other agents such as chemical drugs and cytokines.
