In recent years, much attention has been focused on supramolecular chemistry, because of the recognition of the importance of specific noncovalent interactions in biological systems and in chemical processes. This paper reports the recent topics regarding supramolecular self-assembly through hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds, and charge-transfer interactions. Double helices assemble by coordination of oligopyridine ligands to Cu(I) ion. Cyridrical, rack-type, ladder-type, grid-type, macrocyclic, and spherical complexes with voids self-assemble through metal-ligand coordination bonds, which structures are governed by the geometry of the metal ion. Discrete macrocyclic structures are expanded to infinite frameworks. Pyridylboranes are self-assembled through intermolecular boron-nitrogen coordination bonds to afford cyclic oligomers. Interlocking ring systems such as catenanes and rotaxanes are easily prepared in high yields by the supramolecular assistance to synthesis; applications to molecular meccano are also discussed.
