This paper is a comparative study of the situation among women in Japan, Indonesia and Sweden viewed from the differences in their educational background and their situation in the labor market. The cultural and economical differences between these three countries put different problem in focus in each country. For example, Sweden is more advanced than of Japan and Indonesia in the matter of law, which gives women equal rights in society. Compared to Indonesian women, who are tied with religious rules, women in Sweden and Japan are enjoying greater freedom. Women in Japan and Sweden do not have any problem entering school and achieving a higher education since economically they can afford to do that.To be able to get common information about the women situation in these three countries, we handed out a questionnaire to university students and working women in Sapporo, Jakarta and Gothenburg. According to the results of the questionnaire, 87% of respondents in Jakarta would like to continue their studies to a higher level, while only 12% of respondents in Sapporo are thinking about that. In Gothenburg, 54% of the respondents are planning to study until graduate school. Since the school system in Sweden is different compared to Indonesia and Japan, even though 87% of respondents in Jakarta would like to continue their studies, it is quite difficult to put it into reality, because economically a lot of people can not afford to study at college or university. Forty two % of respondents in Jakarta and 35% of respondents in Sapporo are planning to get a job after they finish their studies, while in Gothenburg the percentage is 100%. According to 1997 statistic, 43.2% (BPS 1997) of women in Indonesia and 39.5%(井 上・江原 1999) of women in Japan are employed, and in 1999,47.4% (SCB 2000) of women in Sweden are employed. The main reason why the percentage of working women in Indonesia is higher than in Japan is the society system, for example, Indonesian families use to have housekeeper who can take care of the children when the mother is working. On the other hand, since there are more women who can afford to support themselves, the divorce rate is rising. According to the respondents opinion, marriage is still an important part of life for women in Japan and Indonesia. In Sweden it is not as important to get married as for women in Japan and Indonesian. The Japanese and Indonesian governments are trying to improve women's situation in society by changing and making new laws, but the problem is that there are a lot of women who do not understand that they have to help themselves.
