The purpose of this study is to investigate Lafcadio Hearn's fiftyfour year career in as much detail as possible and to describe the stages of his career in the form of a chronological record. Since 1986 I have published a series of papers dealing with the latter part of his life which he spent in Japan. These appeared annually in The Bulletin of the College of Art and Sciences at Sapporo, Tokai University (BCASSTU )(No.4〜No.8) and Hokkaido Tokai University Bulletin Humanities and Social Sciences (HTUBHSS)(No.2〜No.5).From 1990 to 1993 this study was supported by the Ministry of Education(C-02610215) during which time I collected the results of all my studies and compiled them into a report of 375 pages in 1993. This paper investigates the early stage of Hearn's European days. The deatails of the changes that took place in his thought, the development of his writing activities, and the process by which he created his works are brought out by reproducing Hearn's daily life in deatail. This paper shall not stop at merely displaying his outward behavior, but shall go on to cast light upon his inward situation, that is to say, his mental struggle.
