This paper attempts to examine how and why Jaivi was used in Islamic journals and books written by Islamic reformists in West Sumatra in the first half of twentieth century. There were nine Islamic journals written in Jaivi in the first period from 1911 to 1920. AlMunir, published in Padang, West Sumatra from 1911-1916, was the first such journal. Its aim was to guide the people to true religion; to augment their knowledge and strengthen their brotherhood and peaceful relations. It also incorporated translated articles from Middle East journals, including Al-Manar of Egypt. Besides Al-Munir, eight other journals were also published. Jawi was used because it was thought that people could understand Jawi better than Latin, since most of them were already familiar with the Arabic script of Al-Quran which they studied when young. Besides these journals, Islamic books were also mainly written in Jawi. Most of the works of Abdul Karim Amrullah (1879-1945), a leading ulama at that time, were written in Jaivi. In the post-1920 period, with the penetration of Dutch secular education at the village level, the number of journals written in the Latin character gradually increased at the expense of Jaivi.
