Cardiac Interbeat interval sequences have been measured for 30min. under the six illumination levels of 100,180,320,560,1000 and 1800lx in a test room. Light sources used were fluorescent lamps with color temperature of 4200K. The temperature in the test room was kept at 24±1℃. The color of the walls in the test room was only yellowish green close to 7.5GY8/2 in the present experiments. A component due to blood pressure vasomotor activity was obtained by passing the cadiac interval signal through a narrow band digital filter. Mean heart rate and ratio of the power of the vasomotor component to the total power of the cardiac signal were significantly responsive to 1/4log unit in illuminance. The results suggested that physiological load was minimum in the illuminance range from 500 to 600lx and increased prominently with an increase in illuminance from this range, while it increased only moderately with a decrease in illuminance. Psychologically, however, the subjects required an illuminance level higher than the above mentioned range.
