A fundamental study has been made of physiological effects of illumination levels, and at the same time psychological effects have been investigated by use of a simple questionnaire. Light sources used in this experiment were fluorescent lamps of the color temperature of 4200K. The wall in the test room was, in one case white, and, in another case, yellow green close to 7.5GY 8/2. The room temperature was kept at 24±1℃. Heart rate, based on the R-R interval, was measured on 10 or 12 samples for 25 minutes under the lighting conditions of illumination levels of 10,32,100,320,1000 and 2000lx. The amount of physiological load was assessed from the mean heart rate and heart rate variability. Then, it was found in the case of the white wall that physiological load became minimum at the illumination level of 100lx, but the psychologically optimum level was 320lx. On the other hand, in the case of the yellow green wall physiological load became minimum at the illumination level of 320lx, but the psychologically optimum level was 1000lx.
