A spouted bed type plasma reactor, using the argon plasma jet stream as a spouting gas, was developed, and pyrolysis of coals in the reactor were studied. Effective plasma energy in the range 0.3∿1.0kw, and coal particle size from 40 to 100 mesh were used for the pyrolysis. The temperature variation of the spouted bed, decomposition rate of the coal, composition of gaseous products and rate of gas ebolution, during the pyrolysis, were examined. Products were a solid residue and gases containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethylene, acetylene, propylene and propane. The effects of argon flow rate and energy consumption on the results of pyrolysis were discussed. Though such a small apparatus used, acetylene yields as high as 22∿28g per 1 kwh were obtained.
