Townsend's ionization coefficient a in an ac electric field √2 E, cos ωt is investigated by encompassing the frequency range from DC to microwave. Based on the empirical formula for α as a function of the power k of the reduced effective electric field Ee/p, where Ee is equal to νEr / ( ω2 + ν2 )1/2 and ν is the electron collision frequency, the maximum and inflection points of α / p with k = 1 and 2 are examined by changing the gas pressure p. Using the dependence of α / p on (Ee / p)l/2, argon breakdown conditions in DC and microwave fields are reviewed by referring to published observations. For Paschen curve, the renewed prediction is in good agreement with published measurement over a wide range of the similarity variable. Microwave breakdown criteria derived from a simple electron density balance model agree with previous experiments and calculations by rigorous kinetic theories, especially, on the right hand branch of the minimum of V-shaped breakdown curves.
