The critical current above which a positive column becomes moving striation-free, is measured for 3 torr argon-mercury vapour mixture gas discharges in a temperature range from 15℃ to 65℃ by using discharge tubes immersed in an oil-bath. Factors affecting the critical current value, such as a local transverse magnet, external circuit conditions and presence of any low frequency oscillations in plasma are discussed by showing an important role of the feedback mechanism to excitation or damping of moving striations. And also the hysteresis effect of the critical current is explained by this feed-back mechanism. It is found that d.c. light intensity of the positive column increases linearly with the discharge current, but above the critical current its change with the tube current becomes giving different two parts of the light intensity change.
