This paper states the romantic painter Haydon's great influence on the original poet Keats's sonnet entitled "On Seeing the Elgin Marbles for the First Time." This paper stresses Keats's weakness, his lack of ability to do justice to the subject, and his own insufficiency, "Like a sick eagle looking at the sky", "Yet 'tis a gentle luxury to weep" which the author thinks the finest image on a poet (=John Keats himself) that has ever been written. So Keats is called an original sonneteer. This paper explains the Petrarchan sonnet that Keats uses, which is a sonnet containing an octave with the rhyme pattern (= abba / abba) and a sestet of the rhyme pattern (cdc / dcd). This is called the Italian sonnet. In this paper the author examines the exquisite contrast between "a sick eagle" and "a sick poet (= Keats himself)" on the basis of the imagery and symbols of "an eagle" spoken in the European countries and in the Holy Bible. An eagle is a large bird of prey (= one that attacks and eats other birds, small animals) of family Accipitridate, with keen vision and powerful flight. An eagle symbolizes pride, power, strength, speed, and youth in English and American Literature. This paper investigates Keats's poetical world of "Such dim-conceived glories of the brain / Bring round the heart an undescribable feud" in the sestet. The word of feud means lasting mutual hostility, especially between two tribes, families with murderous assaults in revenge for previous injury. The author examines a bitter quarrel between the brain (= the Elgin marbles) and the heart (= the English poet Keats) in the sonnet. The Elgin marbles symbolizes polytheism (= Graecism), and the English poet Keats symbolizes monotheism (=Christianism).
