This paper deals with the significance and problems the waveform equalization in repeatered optical-fiber PCM communication systems, and with the optimum equalizing waveform which minimizes the power sum of shot noise, thermal noise and intersymbol interference. The optimum equalized waveforms are presented in some situations. Although the shot noise is a dominant disturbance factor, the optimum equalized wavefome calculated does not have much difference from that in a coaxial cable PCM system. The optical-fiber PCM system working at a bit rate less than 100Mb/s have the improvement in a repeater span (about 2Kms irrelevant to the bit rate) due to the waveform equalization. The multiplicative relation between shot noise and intersymbol interference is considered. The comparision of repeatered systems with and without waveform equalization is presented from the economical point of view under the constraint that the total transmitting information and the transmission length are fixed.
