A definite procedure, which is called a total index here, must be determined in order to rank the candidates in an entrance examination. One of the typical total indices is a weighted sum of the individual scores of several tests, although many total indices might be considered. First, in this paper, two measures ν and λ for comparison between two total indices, are proposed and tabulated. ν and λ are defined as the number of candidates who are successful under one total index but not under another one, and as the ratio of ν over the total number of candidates, respectively. Second, several statistical criteria to derive total indices are formulated. One new criterion which is to equalize the correlation coefficient of the total index with each test can derive a total index in a simple way. It will be applicable in other statistical fields. Finally, the actual data in Yamanashi University are analysed in order to compare those criteria.
