• We obtained bulbous roots of a chinese yam potato, Dioscorea bulbifera L.grown mainly in the suburban area of Taipei, Taiwan. The roots were ground into powders after lyophilization, and the effective components were extracted with alcohol and other organic solvents. Repeating oral doses of the powder itself or the alcohol extract to KK-A^y strain mice exhibited a significant hypoglycemic effect in a short period. Also the same effect was found in case of adult humans with hyperglycemia. Particularly, a few persons showed a marked recovery from hyperglycemia with in one month. An HPLC elution pattern showed the existence of tocopherols in an extract with acetonitrile. The toxicity test revealed that the lethal dose of the powder of Dioscorea b. was higher than 4,000 mg/kg in mice.
