Absorption spectra of bacteriochlorophyll a (Bchl) in the near-infrared region and the specific content of Bchl (Bchl/protein) were examined for Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides cell grown in various culture media. The absorption spectrum was resolved into three main absorption bands, i.e., B800,B850 and B875,and one satellite band. The absorption peak and the half-band width of each absorption band were almost identical among all the absorption spectra of the cells. The difference of the absorption spectra came from the difference of the relative amounts of the main three absorption bands. The ratio of the area of B800 to that of B850 was constant in spite of the variation in the specific content of Bchl. In the cells whose specific content of Bchl was high, the areas of B800 and B850 were large, but that of B875 was small.
