In this thesis, the meaning and characters of 'Pattern of Interpretation' (in German 'Deutungsmuster') is introduced. In West Germany, a main trend of adult education since 1970s is an vocational-oriented 'further education' (Weiterbildung), but on the other hand, some adult educators have developed an nonvocational and dailylife-oriented adult education, called 'educational activities for target groups' (Zielgruppenarbeit) or other activities near social work. And in order to activate these educational activities, a theory of 'Pattern of Interpretation' (Deutungsmuster), has been developed, which means there is an common pattern of thinking, interpretation and activity in each target group. Firstly, based on a theory by R. Arnold, a researcher of the theory of Deutungsmuster, some characters of Deutungsmuster have been introduced and analysed, namely, perspectivity, reduction of complexity, palusibility, latency, continuity and flexibility, persistence of experiences in childhood, socialisation of Deutungsmuster. Secondly meanings of the theory of Deutungsmuster in the field of adult education are pointed out from following three points of the view; (1) aquiring of credits or regaining of identity, (2) indoctrination or selfreflexion, and (3) dialectical aproach to Deutungsmuster.
