The Mannen elementary school, founded and managed by Tokyo City in the early 1900's, was one of its "special elementary schools." School management and educational ideas of Ryunosuke Sakamoto (1870〜1942), its principal, are examined in this paper to clarify the historical character of the "special elementary schools." Previous studies on Sakamoto has been based on the novel Kyoikusha (the Educator) by Tomomichi Soeda. But I encountered Soeda's interview notes of Sakamoto, which Soeda based his novel on, and could examine them closely thanks to the kind offer of Soeda's family. This paper is based on this precious material which has not been open to the public so far. The following two questions are addressed in this paper: (1) Why the "special elementary schools" were founded? (2) How Sakamoto managed the Mannen elementary school? The conclusion is as follows: School management of Sakamoto responded to the nation's new demand to education in the early 1900's, which was to produce the factory labarors and to establish its family based on the sexual role division in it. "Special schools" were to educate the desirable moral and style of the family life. This was the new task assigned to the school at that time. This presents the important case in which the change in the school role in the early 1900's is clearly illustrated.
