A number of researchers have engaged in the studies of insulating gases taking the place of SF_6,thus many valuable papers have been published in the last decade. L. G. Christophorou et al. proposed ternary gas mixtures comprising N_2+SF_6 or CHF_3+SF_6,and small amounts of a strongly electron-attaching perfluorocarbon as gaseous insulation with more efficient properties. The authors have investigated the breakdown strength of the ternary gas mixtures comprised of N_2,SF_6,and c-C_4F_8. They have already reported that the gases with specifled mixture ratio(e. g., N_2(70%), SF_6(27%), and c-C_4F_8(3%)) have presented higher breakdown strength than binary gas mixtures (e. g., N_2(70%), SF_6(30%)) under the same quasi-uniform DC fields. Furthermore, it has been clarified by the authors that the breakdown strength of the gases in the region of high pressure under non-uniform DC fields has been higher than that of pure SF_6 or binary gas mixtures of N_2 and SF_6 under the same conditions. The optimum gaseous insulating media have to be adopted after estimating the performance characteristics such as breakdown strength, voltage-time characteristics, temperature of liquefaction, chemical stability, toxicity, explosiveness, combustibility, and economical costs, in the practical application. The injurious substances, decomposition byproducts resulted from electric discharges, are very important factors for the estimation of insulating gases. From this point of view, the authors detect the decomposition byproducts caused by spark discharge in the ternary gas mixtures by means of infrared spectroscopy. The generation of SOF_2 as main byproducts of the gases are ascertained from the observed spectra in their experiments. It is confirmed that the byproducts in the gas are almost the same in the case of pure SF_6. It is concluded that the ternary gas mixtures with specified mixture ratio possess a possibility of being an alternative insulating gas to SF_6,and the discharge process of the gas is very interesting subjects for the future studies in this fields.
