The surface structures of adult Thelazia callipaeda infected in the conjunctival sac of dogs were observed by light and scanning electron microscopy. 1. The light microscopic observations confirmed the previous reports on the basic structures of both male and female worms. 2. The cuticle of the worm had fine transverse striations with 5 to 6μ intervals and showed a saw-like structure. The cuticle of head region and lateral lines had no transverse striation. 3. The structure of the anterior tip was similar in both male and female worms. They had no lips, but there was a short vestibule (oral cavity) which was continuous with the origin of the esophagus. 4. The vulva at the antero-ventral surface and the anus at the postero-ventral surface were observed as the peculiar structures of female worms. 5. The male worms had two copulatory spicules which protruded from the cloaca at the end of the body. It appeared that the anterior short spicule enveloped the basal portion of the posterior spicule. 6. The present study revealed the structure, location and number of two types of sensory organs on the body surface. The papillary sensory organ was a rounded elevation of cuticle with a central nipple-like structure. These papillae were found on the head region about the mouth, on the lateral line in the neck region and on the caudal end of both male and female worms. Paired genital papillae of male worms had the same structure. Another type of sensory organ was a pit, possibly an amphid, which had a slit-like opening of the cuticle and was situated on the anterior tip of the worms. 7. In addition to the previous findings of others, one papilla on the lateral side of the vulva and one papilla just in front of the anus of female worms were recognized.
