Recently, most junior or senior high schools in Japan have been employing native speakers as Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) in their English teaching programs. There are a great deal of anecdotal comments about the roles of the ALTs. However, there have been few empirical studies to evaluate the effect of the ALTs so far. Such studies are needed, because almost all Japanese English teachers who teach with ALTs do not understand the effect of the ALTs on their students. In fact, both ALTs and English teachers need to know the effects ALTs have on students in order to make effective use of ALTs in English classes. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether ALT affect the students' anxiety. The subjects are 240 first graders. They are asked to answer questionnaires twice, STAI (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), to see how individuals change their anxiety level in certain situations.
