Given the typical Kosen student's academic background and learning situation, how the instructor of Technical English (TE) recognizes student needs and gives motivation to begin the study of TE, especially as a tool of global communication, is very important. The student's previous experience with English, the motivation level of the student, and his or her present and future needs as related to the language together form the dominant variables which influence the development of content for a TE course. This paper briefly gives background on the fifth year mechanical engineering (ME) student population's English language ability, as these individuals form the first potential candidates for participation in the newly devised Advanced Study pathway at Kobe Kosen. After briefly summarizing the general educational environment and academic background of this subject group, a practical, hands on method of presenting TE is laid down, the success or failure of which will be taken into consideration in the development of TE courses for the Advanced Study Pathway.
