The purpose of this article is to discuss the role of the liberal arts in nursing education. Liberal arts subjects and their links to critical thinking, competency, empathy and patient understanding are explored and the use of liberal arts in nursing in Australia, America and Europe is identified. The benefits of the study of liberal arts in an increasingly technical world made ever smaller by globalisation are discussed.
