Despite of the great Depression, Adams continued her movements for women suffrage. She did not persist in complete equality between men and women in order to support special features of women such as delivery and childrearing. At this point, Adams seemed to have a quite flexible thought, but in private she was so conservative that she never drank alcohol. This conservativeness in life-style is one of the common factors with Nightingale, who had no interest in having a relationship with men. Late in Adam's life, she was nominated for one of the seventh greatest Americans, in which Lincoln was also nominated. Her fame only increased, but on the other hand the death of her best friend, Mary Smith, was such a tragedy that she nearly lost her will to live. No sooner had she been awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1931, she passed away by cancer. In this chapter, it shows how the two made their achievements for independence of women through their lives. There are some similarities in the image of ideal woman that Adams and Nightingale each had. They both evaluated the function of women, especially delivery and childrearing, as essential roles in society. They innovated this function to enrich the lives of women and to bring social independence to women. Adams found the way to socialize this particular role of women in pacifist movements and social activities, and Nightingale ensured the status of nurse as a special occupation. They were headed for the same goal in different ways. Neither was married or had own family, but they could point out the importance of supporting lives of family. As a result, their effects were remarkable to numerous women and still they are. Their thoughts might sound conservative and old, but Adams and Nightingale had faith in women to seize their independence by participating in society. This can also be a rediscovery in function of women in the society of today.
