Measurement of EHD Velocity Field Induced in Dielectric Liquid under AC Corona Discharge by Image Processing

We have discovered that an EHD phenomenon of dielectric liquid is caused by AC corona discharges at a needle shaped electrode arranged in the space above the liquid surface. This EHD phenomenon has been not cleared in the electrical and hydrodynamical mechanisms. In order to clarify the electrical and hydrodynamical mechanisms of this EHD phenomenon, we have studied the measurements of velocity field of the EHD flow caused by image processing. This paper describes the experimental results for several kinds of viscous silicone oil. The velocity fields of the EHD fluid flow were successfully obtained by means of the flow visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques.
