Fluid Flow Measurement of Electrohydrodynamic Convection Fields by Binary Correlation Technique

An image processing method is presented in this paper for measuring flow velocity distribution of electrohydroynamic convection fields by a correlation technique concerning binary tracer images. Since the method is based on a concept of particle tracking methods, the flow velocity is calculated from the average moving distance and direction of the tracer particles traveling along with fluid flow. Experimental measurements have been made of some interesting velocity distributions of the silicon oil flow which is electrically operated under non-uniform electric fields. The fluid flow near the high voltage electrode accelerates with the applied voltage due to the increased electrostatic force. The fluid flow also shows the effect that the flow velocity near the high voltage electrode biased with negative voltage is larger than that biased with positive one. In addition, the experimental result gives the observation that a hydrodynamic property of electrohydrodinamic convection and natural convection is similar. Moreover, the method has the great advantage that it enables us to continuously measure the velocity distribution of unsteady flow fields.
