A Study on the Lateral Aerodynamic Characteristics of Paraglider

The sideforce coefficient C_y, the rolling moment coefficient C_l and the yawing moment C_n are generated by the sideslip for a paraglider. We calculated these coeficients by using the boundary element method. These calculated values coincided with the values by a wind tunnel experiment. Furthermore, the generation mechanism of these lateral force and moments were made clear due to the calculated aerodynamic pressure distribution on a canopy of the paraglider. The negative sideforce is generated by tilt of larger lift on the left wing than that on the right wing for the positive sideslip of paraglider. The positive rolling moment is generated by the larger lift on left wing than that on right wing for the positive sideslip of paraglider. The lateral tilt of the lift is caused by the negative dihedral of canopy. These sideforce and rolling moment are caused by the negative dihedral of canopy. The positive yawing moment is generated by the larger pressure on the leading edge part of left wing than that of right wing for the positive sideslip of paraglider.
