Electric vehicles (EV) has been studied by a lot of investigation organizations. The EV requires usually a secondary batteries which is able to supply electric power for a long driving distance. However, the adequate secondary batteries has not been easily developed. Because Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) uses especially a liquid fuel and operates at normal temperature, therefore, it can be used as an appropriate battery for electric vehicle. The recent researches and developments on the DMFC were carried out only in the USA in last few years. In this paper the polarization property of DMFC was studied and analyzed for the first time in Japan. Experimental I-V characteristics and transient response of output voltage were investigated using a stepping current method. Reduction of concentration polarization, activation polarization and methanol diffusion crossover the electrolyte are the dominant factors for improving the cell output. The second test cell without water repellent treatment on the methanol electrode and optimum polymerization of gel electrolyte yielded 1.4 times lager output power than the first test cell.
