A recent trend in reducing the size and weight of rotating machines, has been on improvement of the insulation materials and systems of the coil. The insulation systems of the stator for industrial rotating machine coil are composed mainly of the plastic films and the mica composite materials. In this study, the most decisive factor to enhance breakdown voltage is revealed and the importance of the selection of insulation materials in the design of the coil insulation system is pointed out, from a statistical analysis of the short time breakdown voltages of model coils. The main results and conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) The breakdown voltage characteristics of the coil are approximated as a straight line in the Weibull plot. At this time, it is confirmed that the breakdown voltage of the model coil is improved due to the impregnation with resin, and the scattering of the breakdown voltage of the model coil becomes smaller. 2) Since the breakdown tends to occur at the conductor corner exposed to a high electric field, the use of an insulating tape with a high breakdown voltage characteristics is recommended as the inner layer of the coil insulation systems.
