Experimental investigations on the roughness effect of circular cylinder surface in an uniform flow were carried out in the Reynolds number range of 0.86×10^4≨Re≨4.87×10^5,in wind tunnel, using 4 cylinders with different surface roughness of regular axial U-grooves. Flow phenomena around circular cylinders are classified in three types regardless of surface roughness, such as subcritical critical and supercritical regions. These regions are distinguished by the variations of the drag coefficients or by the back pressure distribution. On the boundary between the critical and supercritical regions, that is called critical point, are achieved minimum C_D and maximum C_Pb as maxium Strouhal number. With an increase of the relative surface roughness, critical points shift to lower Reynolds number range and minimum C_D become larger.
