Effects of autonomic nervous regulation on cardiovascular system are assessed by means of power spectrum analysis and chaos analysis on the fluctuations in cardiovascular parameters such as heart beat period, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. These fluctuations are characterized by the slopes of the logarithm of power spectral density plotted as a function of the logarithm of frequency, the three-dimensional phase space trajectories, their Poincare maps, first return maps and the correlation dimensions evaluated from the random time series of cardiovascular parameters. The activities of autonomic nervous system are estimated by postural changes. As for the fluctuations of heart beat period and systolic blood pressure, the slope of the power spectrum becomes steep and the correlation dimension is low in the supine posture where the activity of parasympathetic nervous system is dominant, whereas in the standing posture the slope becomes gentle and the dimension is high due to the additional activation of sympathetic nervous system. On the contrary, in the case of the fluctuations of diastolic blood pressure both the slope of the power spectrum and the correlation dimension are almost insensible to the postural changes.
